Today several DAP Penang members held a simple protest to show our solidarity with Po Kuan. We also took the opportunity to condemn the two BN MPs for their offensive remarks against Po Kuan and women in general.

There is an avalanche of public opinion against Jasin and Kinabatangan. However some expressed disgust with the way this “Po Kuan leaks every month” fiasco was handled by Parliament.

First, the BN duo did not show any sense of remorse over the unpleasant episode. In fact, Jasin initially flatly denied he ever uttered the remark. He only changed his tune when it was made known that video recording had captured his misdemeanour.

Secondly, Speaker took four and a half hours to mull over the Po Kuan’s motion but finally he decided to knock it out on technical ground. Although he expressed regret over the incident, he did not get the duo to withdraw and apologise to the House to redeem women’s dignity.

Thirdly, BN women MPs did not endear themselves to Malaysian public and women by their lack of spine in taking a stand against their male counterparts. Some of them left the chamber immediately, while others just refused to go into the chamber to cast a vote. But what they said outside is completely different.

Minister Nazri and Shahrir’s comments did not help to diffuse the situation. In fact it makes the matters worse.

Po Kuan and other DAP women MPs (Teresa and Chong Eng) have been on the receiving ends of sexual and demeaning remarks ever since they stepped into Parliament since 1999.

There is an element of double standard. Remember the punishment against Po Kuan and Karpal. They were suspended without allowance for six months! But until today, most BN offenders are just let off the hook.

What can we do? Sisters, one way is to use your votes to teach them a lesson. Make them pay dearly for their misdeeds.
