No adverse impact on flora on isle
THE proposed water storage tank and retention pond project on Pulau Jerejak will not have an adverse impact on flora and medicinal plants such as tongkat ali, kacip fatimah and aromatic gaharu, state executive councillor Chow Kon Yeow said.
He said the project did not involve the clearing of forest reserve that boasts such vegetation.
“Only the secondary forest will be cleared to make way for the water storage tank and retention pool to store some 45 million litres of water transferred via pipe from mainland to cater to Bayan Lepas Free Industrial zone, Batu Maung and Pulau Jerejak,” said Chow.
He said based on a report from the state Forestry Department, 295ha of forest reserve would be left untouched.
“The project only involves 3.54ha of the total 362ha of Pulau Jerejak,” he said, allaying nature lovers’ fear the development would destroy the pristine environment.
The project to build the facilities started last December and would be completed within 18 months.
Chow said the Forestry Department hoped the contractor, Premidon Construction, would carry out the work well to minimise erosion risk.
“The contractor has been told to build a silt trap and drainage system to mitigate erosion and control the pollution to the sea.”
He said all the trees cut to develop the project would also be transported back to the mainland for disposal.
“We prohibit burning on the island,” he said.

Hi Chow, I’m Elena of PJ. Sorry to post this request in this thread which is totally irrelevant. But I have no way to request for my help. Read the news of a 10 yrs old boy who been living with his younger brother for the past 2 years. Out of compassion and loves, my hubby and I very much hope to keep in touch with the young boy. Totally no ill wishes and bad intentions, just hope to let him know, everyone do love him. Of course, I have discussed with my hubby, we are very keen to sponsor him in his tutorial expenses, whether he’s in Penang or Kuantan. Please help. I need his contact and if possible his address. Please reach us at 012-2089118. TQ, Wilson & Elena

Well the flora maybe OK, but how about the fauna (all the animal life in a particular area/region).
Was there any study on this?

I noticed the clearing on Pulau Jerejak while driving to work two days ago.
I went back to the Bayan Lepas seashore this morning with a long telephoto lens and captured some camera shots of the denuded part of the islands.
Its really got me concerned - I hope the contractor and the state government is taking appropriate steps to safeguard the island’s environment. Its too precious to destroy.

Dear YB,
I know u are pissed about the flak from NGOs regarding the appointment of municipal officers.
well, here is a link to Malaysia Today and at time of writing, the commentators support so…so cheer up
Personally, I think this is an improvement already. Let the NGO perform and if NGO brings in value, their voices can be increased one way or the other 8 months time.
Perhaps the NGOs can be invited as guests in the routine meetings to be heard.
You can’t pacify all but you done better than the previous one!

Dear YB Chow,
As you are the exco in charge of local governments… Could you take a look on the recent outcry by about 55 NGOs regarding the un-transparency and unsatisfying appointment of Cities Councilors by Penang government?
As a supporter of DAP, I’m deeply saddened by the fact that the DAP-led government did not react positively towards the outcry…
An explanation, a roadmap towards local election in Penang… is all I wish to see from you… is it THAT HARD?
