No to Local Government election, says Ka Chuan
8 Mei 2008
Tuan Chow Kon Yeow (Tanjong) minta Menteri Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan menyatakan adakah kerajaan bercadang untuk memulihkan sistem pilihanraya kepada kerajaan tempatan. Jika ya, beri butir. Jika tidak, mengapa.
Jawapan:
Untuk makluman Ahli Yang Berhormat, KERAJAAN TIDAK BERCADANG UNTUK MENGADAKAN PILIHANRAYA KERAJAAN TEMPATAN.
Short and Sweet. That is the reply from the Federal Government.

Yes. We understand that the federal government has no plan for any local election. We have known that for a long time and we expect they will hardly change any time soon. Isn’t that why we voted DAP and Pakatan Rakyat into Penang?
From this link though, there seems to be legal loopholes which one can exploit and capitalise on to create local election without federal government approval. The question now becomes when does DAP in Penang intend to introduce local election regardless of federal government’s disaproval?
I have been very critical of BN in the past, and I am slowly but gradually becoming more critical towards DAP, and the Penang state government as a whole. I don’t mean to be rude here, I just hope Penang can continue to improve. My recent blog post shows my gradual disappointment towards Penang State Government in certain aspects.
The above comment was first made in YB. Liew Chin Tong’s blog. What’s your take on it YB. Chow?

It is much better to have an elected local council for Penang Island. Yes, the PR-controlled MPPP is now providing services for the 600,000 islanders, and it is the wish of every Penangite that they can do a much better job than the previous BN councillors. We want a Penang that is clean, green and its roads and streets congestion-free. I would like to see the MPPP discourage the widespread use of plastic bags among the people. If possible, the MPPP should also consider providing a few wheelchair vans or buses to cater to the needs of the physically-handicapped.

Dear Khensthoth,
Honestly speaking, don’t you think it sounds so fishy. Such loopholes being publiscised in the mainstream newspaper that is more sympathetic towards the ruling party. Even though in the Sun so called perceived to be more liberal.
The penang government has only been in power for 2 months. There are better things for the government. You should be pressuring the federal government. They have more power. Funny that penangites kept silent for 50 years or 18 years under the not so compotent Dr Koh’s adminsitration.

You may be right, looes74. However, this is day 87 DAP-PKR is in power, if my calculations are correct. Honestly, I don’t see significant change yet. A Penangite studying in Melbourne now, I can only get information through news and blogs, and from what I read, so far what have caught the most attention are one arguments through the mass media after another, with comments going back and forth.
I for one is happy that we have a new government in Penang, but I feel that maybe they have been in the opposition for too long, that they still do not know how to act as a professional government. That, however, is entirely my opinion.
I am sorry if I offended anyone.

Dear Khensbooth,
The GE itself is a very significant change. Although we see an increase of opposition MPs, it simply not enough to simply revamp the local election bill. I believe that the state government has reasons why not to pursue this issue. Especially there are hidden agendas that would overturn the decision if they go ahead with implementation. Look at what happen in 50km ban for Singapore motorists. You wanted to have a flip flop government
For goodness sake, the government has only been in power for 2 to 3 months. If you can bear with the incompetence of Gereakan for so long, shouldn’t we have patience on them?
Anyway, I am not offended. It’s just we should exercise some patience, shouldn’t we

Sure. We shall be patient. By the way, I have never tolerated the incompetence of Gerakan. From the day I know how to think, analyse and criticise, I have spoken against Gerakan. Sure, Penang has benefited under Tun Dato’ Sri Lim Chong Eu, but under Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon? I just wonder why it took so long for my fellow Penangites to vote them out.
